Dog Training Collars to Stop Dogs Pulling

Training your dog to walk nicely on the lead should be a top priority. A dog which pulls on the lead is no fun to take for a walk and in severe cases can even dissuade you from taking him out all together. This in turn leads to a very bored dog which becomes destructive and a nuisance.

The type of training collar you choose for such a dog is very important. And the key is to choose a collar that he doesn't like to pull against but he is comfortable wearing. Dogs can happily strain against a normal collar as it sits at the base of the neck and the dog can use his weight to pull his owner around without much discomfort to himself.

Choke Chains
Choke chains should be avoided with any dog, wether your are training them or not, as the period they work for is often very short. This is because the dog gets used to feeling a bit strangled when he pulls. And when he does pull tight the links of the chain catch on each other, preventing the dog from suffocating himself but also preventing the choke chain from working. There are many far more effective and kinder methods of training your pup.

Gentle Leader Dog Training Collar
This is a training collar that has a loop going over the bridge of the nose and the leash attaches to the side. These are a great way to get your dog to stop pulling. As soon as he does so his head is turned to one side preventing him from using his weight.

They can take a dog a while to get used to and he will paw at his face a lot when it first goes on, but persevere as he will get used to it eventually. Be careful with these to ensure they are not too tight, the dog should be able to pant freely and the nose hoop should not roll up to his eyes. Be sure to buy the right size for your dog.

Halti Dog Training Collar
This is a fancy version of the gentle leader where the leash attaches just beneath the dogs jaw, again the dog cannot pull as the collar will turn his head to one side. The halti collar gives your dog more movement in his mouth and there is no way the nose loop can go up to his eyes. Be sure to buy the right size for your dog.

halti collars

Halti Padded Dog Training Collar
These have been designed to stop the dog pulling but also the prevent biting in aggressive dogs. When the dog is relaxed the collar behaves the same as the usual halti collar but if the dog lunges forward than the slip loop will close the dog's mouth.

It goes without saying that none of the training collars should ever be used with a long or flexi leash. If your dog bolted forward and was suddenly pulled up short by the leash the twisting effect of the collar could easily break his neck.
