Training a Dog to Stand

Getting your dog to stand might seem like a bit of an odd thing to teach, but having a dog that will stand still is useful for trips to the vet, bathing and grooming.

Luckily it's also one of the easier commands to teach as it's all done in just one step.

Teaching your dog to stand.
When your dog is lying flat on his belly, not his side, gently slip your hand beneath him and press up. He should start to stand up.

As soon as he does say 'Stand' and give him lots of praise when he does. Repeat this until he stands on command.

If you don't want to use the hand method, or if you have a really big dog that doesn't react when you put your hand under him, then you can try much the same trick using a treat in front of his nose. When your dog is lying on his belly place the treat in front of his nose and slowly move it straight up. Don't move the treat back other wise he will try to sit. As he stands up say 'stand' and praise him when he does.

Remember that lots of praise and patience is the key teaching any dog a new trick.
