Shih Tzu - Proud, Social and a True Companion Dog.

Average size and life span: Small, 12years +

Exercise levels: Low – medium.

Shih tzus do not need a huge amount of exercise and one walk and a good romp around in the back garden is ebough to keep them content. When walking they should kept on a harness as opposed to collar so that the windpipe is not impeded. Having a short nose Shih tzu are prone to over heating in hot weather as they can't pant enough to lower their body temperature.

Clipped Shih Tzu

Grooming: Shih tzus have long luxurious fur and in its natural state this will need to be brushed every day to prevent mats. Many owners clip their Shih tzus into a 'puppy cut' which simplifies grooming but they still need a good thorough brushing every 2-3 days.

Temperament: Shih tzu are true companion dogs that love company. They are very playful and loving, and great fun to watch as they strut around in a proud manner. Shih tzus are confident little dogs so they do need thorough socialisation as puppies.

Full Coat Shih Tzu

Ease of Training: Low – medium. You do occasionally see very well trained Shih tzu and they will happily perform for food. But they have an air of arrogance about them that makes them stubborn if they don't see how obeying you will benefit them. As with all small dogs Shih tzu can be difficult to potty train as they have a very small bladder which takes a long time to develop.

Special Training: Shih tzus are true companion dogs, happiest when sitting on his owners lap. They will learn basic commands but shouldn't be trusted to always obey them.
