Naming Your Puppy
Choosing a pet name for your puppy can be a surprisingly hard task, and one that needs careful thought, as both you and your puppy are going to have to live with it for a long time.
Here are some quick tips to help you find the right name for your pup.
1. Try to settle on a name for your puppy as soon as possible as name recognition is vital for effective dog training and obedience.
2. Avoid names that sound like common obedience training commands. For instance, sit, stay, no, come, heel are all commonly used sounds in dog training and it’s best to avoid confusion for the dog where possible. |

3. Choose a puppy name that has hard consonant and vowel sounds as they more easily recognisable to a dog.
4. Short puppy names are better than long ones. Try to keep to just one or two syllables as these will be easier for your puppy to recognise and respond to.
5. Choose a name you don’t mind shouting out in public. If the whole family is to be involved in the training and walking of your puppy, his name has got to be acceptable to all family members. Men, for instance, may not feel comfortable calling ‘Precious’ to heel.
Popular puppy names to think about include names from famous or familiar films (disney dog names are very popular) and books, names that reflect the puppy breed, place names or family names. Some puppy owners give them names to reflect characteristics or temperament, or maybe a puppy name taken from nationality would reflect your puppy’s identity or breed.
