Shetlend Sheep Dog - Smart, Gentle and Loyal

Average size and life span: Small, over 12 years.

Exercise levels: High, Shetland Sheepdogs need lots of physical and mental activity to keep them happy and healthy.

As with all high activity dogs a lack of exercise will cause behavioural problems and Shelties are particularly prone to problem barking, and being quite small they have an ear piercing bark.

Grooming: Medium – brushing 2-3 times per week. There luxurious long coats are prone to matting under the arms and around the tail.

Temperament: Soft and sweet, Shetland sheepdogs are very gentle dogs that can be nervous if not properly socialised. The herding instinct is strong in many individuals and they will naturally herd anything that moves from children and chickens to cars. This tendancy can easily be redirected on to toys as the Shetland Sheepdog is very eager to please his family and is full of playful spirit.

Ease of training: High. Shetland Sheepdogs rank 6th on the dog intelligence scale. They are very fast learners and eager to please their owners. Being able to learn many tricks quickly Shetland sheepdogs are often used in dog dancing routines, though their sensitive nature does mean you can easily lose their trust if you step on them during a dance.

Special training: Shetland sheepdogs excel at advanced obedience, fly ball and agility as they're fast and graceful little dogs that are a delight to watch.
