King Charles Spaniel - Ultra Affectionate and Playful.

Average Size and Lifespan: Small, 12 years +

Exercise Levels: Low to moderate. The King Charles Spaniel will happily go for fairly long walks but is a naturally sedate and content little dog which will be satisfied with two twenty minute walks each day, so long as he has plenty of opportunity to play.

Being flat nosed these dogs can have trouble breathing in hot weather and in summer it's better to walk them in the early morning and late evening.

Grooming: The King Charles Spaniel coat is long but silky, so not as prone to matting as many long haired breeds.

The fur usually looks best when not clipped as it has a very appealing natural wavy flow. Thorough brushing two or three times per week will usually suffice so long as knots are not developing.

Temperament: King Charles Spaniels are naturally happy, bright little dogs that have an aristocratic air about them. They tend to strut around their homes as opposed to walk. King Charles Spaniels are very friendly with people they know, though they can be a bit stand-offish with those they don't. 'People dogs' King Charles Spaniels should show no signs of aggression to anyone.

Ease of Training: King Charles Spaniels are intelligent dogs and a certain level of politeness seems to have been bred into them. You will only very rarely see a totally out of control one. King Charles's are quick to learn and will pick up commands quickly from their owner.

Special Training: King Charles have retained the hunting instict of most spaniel dogs and can be trained to flush birds for shooting. Mostly though they are lap dogs that enjoy being wth their people.

Note: Don't confuse the King Charles Spaniel with Cavalier King Charles Spaniels as they are completely different breeds.
