Akita - Strong and Stubborn. |
Average size and lifespan: Medium Large, 10+ years
Exercise Levels: Medium - Large, a good 40 min walk each day plus play time should be sufficient. Care must be taken in hot weather as the Akita is prone to over heating, during the summer seasons Akitas should be walked in the early morning or late evening.
Grooming: Low. Although the Akita sheds almost constantly they have short tough hair that is not likely to become matted. |
 |
A good brush once a week will keep shedding to a mininum.
Temperment: Akitas are proud aloof dogs that make great guard dogs as they are naturally protective of their territory and family. They do also have a strong hunting instinct so must not be kept with small pets that will be seen as prey. They are very loyal and loving with their humans and for their size they require little exercise.
Ease of training: Low. As stated before Akitas are proud dogs that are not going to obey you just because they've been told to do so. Food oriented training is the best way forward - and even then don't expect miracles.
